Two lots of Bettergoods lemon Alfredo fettuccine are affected, with no illnesses reported in connection with the recall.
NEW YORK — Gias Foods Inc. has recalled two lots of Bettergoods Authentic Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine sold at Walmart stores nationwide after routine testing indicated the frozen pasta could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recall covers 22-ounce yellow packages carrying UPC 194346442706. The affected products are marked with lot number L6079C or L6080C and expiration dates of Sept. 19, 2027, or Sept. 20, 2027. Both the lot number and expiration date are stamped on the back of the package, according to a company announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Gias Foods announced the recall Sept. 15. The company said no illnesses had been reported in connection with the affected pasta. More recent reports published this week continued to cite the FDA notice as saying no illnesses had been reported.
The possible contamination was detected through routine sampling conducted by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, according to the recall announcement. Testing indicated that finished products may contain Listeria monocytogenes. The company stopped distributing the affected product while it and the FDA investigate what caused the problem.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause an infection known as listeriosis. The FDA said the bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy people can experience short-term symptoms including fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
The infection poses particular concerns during pregnancy. According to the FDA, Listeria infection can lead to miscarriage and stillbirth. Federal health authorities have long warned that pregnant people, older adults and those with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of severe illness from the bacteria.
The recall is limited to the identified lots of Bettergoods Authentic Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine rather than all frozen pasta sold at Walmart. The product was distributed to Walmart stores nationwide, making the package information an important part of distinguishing the recalled items from other pasta products.
Gias Foods said consumers who purchased either affected lot were urged to return the pasta to the place of purchase for a full refund. The company also provided an email address and telephone number for questions about the recall. Walmart customers may still have the frozen product stored at home because the affected packages carry expiration dates extending into September 2027.
The company and FDA continue investigating the source of the possible contamination. As of the latest information available Thursday, the recall remained focused on the two identified lots, and no illnesses had been reported in connection with the Bettergoods pasta.
