Police arrested a Richmond woman after 29-year-old Mackayla Paige was shot early Sunday near 14th Street in downtown Oakland.
OAKLAND, Calif. — Mackayla Paige, the 29-year-old reality television personality and social media influencer known as “Kash,” was fatally shot in downtown Oakland early Sunday, and police have arrested a woman in connection with the killing.
Oakland police said officers responded shortly after 1:30 a.m. Oct. 11 to reports of a shooting in the 200 block of 14th Street. Officers found Paige suffering from at least one gunshot wound and attempted lifesaving measures before she was taken to a hospital, where she died. Investigators later arrested an adult woman from Richmond, but authorities have not publicly identified her or announced a motive.
Paige, who was also from Richmond, had developed an online following through appearances on reality programs including “Real West Coast Baddies,” “Young & Reckless” and other streaming productions. She was known to viewers by the name Kash and maintained an active social media presence. Family members and friends described her in interviews with Bay Area news outlets as ambitious, energetic and focused on building a career in entertainment, modeling and beauty.
The shooting occurred near 14th and Harrison streets in downtown Oakland. Video from the scene showed a large emergency response as officers and medical crews worked in the area. A memorial later appeared near the shooting location as friends, relatives and fans gathered to remember Paige.
Police have released few details about what happened immediately before the gunfire. Videos circulating on social media appear to show a confrontation around the time of the shooting, but authorities have not publicly confirmed the full sequence of events shown in those recordings or said what prompted the violence. Investigators also have not said whether Paige and the woman who was arrested knew each other.
The Oakland Police Department’s homicide investigators are handling the case. Authorities have not publicly announced charges against the arrested woman, and an arrest alone does not establish criminal responsibility. Police have asked people with information, photographs or video from the area to contact investigators as they work to determine what happened.
Paige’s death drew tributes from relatives, friends and members of the entertainment community. Family members told local television stations that she wanted to become more successful in reality television while also pursuing modeling and plans for a business connected to makeup and beauty. They urged people following the case online to remember her life and ambitions rather than speculation surrounding her death.
Now That’s TV, a streaming platform associated with programs on which Paige appeared, also posted a tribute after her death. Paige had become recognizable to audiences who follow independently produced reality programming distributed primarily through streaming services and social media.
Her killing came amid intense online discussion about videos said to have been recorded around the shooting. Much of that discussion has included unverified claims about who fired the shot and why. Oakland police have not publicly confirmed those theories, and reliable reports have said the circumstances and possible motive remain under investigation.
Authorities continued investigating the homicide Tuesday. The identity of the woman arrested in connection with Paige’s death had not been released, and police had not publicly disclosed a motive or a detailed account of the events leading to the shooting.
