Small Business Owner Shot to Death While on Vacation

New Orleans, LA — Authorities in New Orleans have identified the victim of the shooting as Jacob A. Carter, 32, who had co-owned Howdy Bagels since 2020. The company released a heartfelt statement on social media describing Jake as someone who radiated kindness, warmth, and genuine care to everyone he encountered.

The shooting occurred in the Marigny neighborhood, at the intersection of Bourbon and Kerelec streets, around 1:32 a.m. on January 5th. Neighbors reported hearing one to two gunshots and suspect that it may have been an attempted armed robbery. They saw the perpetrator fleeing the scene in a vehicle shortly after the gunfire.

Following the devastating news, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support Daniel and Howdy Bagels. The funds will be used to cover the business’s rent, employee wages, and other operational expenses.
