A promising young golfer from Georgia, known for his leadership and camaraderie, tragically died after collapsing during a homecoming prank with friends. The 17-year-old, Hadden Kelly, a junior at Dodge County High School in Eastman, was discovered unresponsive in a yard where he and his friends were engaged in a prank known as TPing, a common activity involving the throwing of toilet paper over houses, trees, and bushes. The unfortunate incident was confirmed by Dodge County Coroner Joe Smith, who is also Kelly’s great-uncle.
The cause of Kelly’s sudden collapse is still undetermined, with autopsy results to ascertain the cause of death still pending. Smith, who is also related to the young athlete, painted a picture of Kelly as a charismatic, outspoken, and talented golfer with a bright future in the professional leagues.
Kelly was a committed golfer who played the sport daily and was employed at the Dodge County golf club. Smith expressed his grief, stating, “If he hadn’t passed, I’m certain he would’ve gone pro.” He further described Kelly as a friendly and outgoing individual who was well-liked by everyone. “He never met a stranger, talked to everybody. A great kid,” Smith added.
Kelly was gearing up to participate in an upcoming state golf tournament and was recognized as one of the most gifted athletes at his high school. According to the Georgia State Golf Association, he had secured two top 10 placements in his 2025 tournaments. His sudden death has left his peers, school, and the golf team he led in a state of shock.
His golf team paid tribute to him on Facebook, lauding his leadership, ambition, and positive attitude. “Hadden was our team leader, always encouraging and forever speaking positive words to all around him,” the post read. His coach and teammates remembered how Kelly, despite often finishing competitions ahead of everyone else, would always stay behind to cheer on and support them.
Dodge County High School officials also extended their condolences to Kelly’s family. “There are no words to express the sadness that our DCHS family feels for the loss of junior Hadden Kelly,” the school said in a Facebook post. “Please join us in prayer for his family, friends, and our DCHS family. ‘Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.’”
