Toddler Survives Terrifying Fall From Fourth-Floor Terrace

Neighbors in Suba used blankets and jackets to catch the child after he slipped from the edge of a home.

BOGOTÁ, Colombia — A 2-year-old boy survived a fall from a fourth-floor terrace in Bogotá on May 7 after neighbors in the La Gaitana neighborhood rushed below him with blankets and jackets, police and local reports said.

The fall happened around 9 p.m. in Suba, a locality in northwestern Bogotá, and was recorded on videos that spread widely online. Police said the child was taken to a medical center and did not suffer serious injuries. The case has since moved to police child protection units and the Colombian Family Welfare Institute, known as ICBF, which is reviewing the child’s home setting and care.

Video from residents showed the boy hanging from the outside edge of a terrace before he lost his grip and dropped. People in the street shouted and moved quickly beneath him as others brought blankets, jackets and thick clothing. A resident told local media that the child appeared with his head and arm over the edge before turning and holding himself up with both arms. “I thought a child should not be there alone,” the resident said. The father, identified in local reports as Edilberto Murillo, said he had left briefly with his brother to buy cigarettes and smoke outside so the apartment would not fill with smoke. When he returned, Murillo said, he saw his son hanging from the terrace and close to falling.

Several local reports said the child had climbed up using brick blocks fixed to a wall near the terrace. The boy hung there for several seconds while neighbors below tried to form a cushion with blankets and clothing. As he fell, he hit part of the building facade before landing in the makeshift net held by at least several people. Javier Cárdenas, an officer with the Bogotá Metropolitan Police, said the community caught the child before he struck the ground. Cárdenas said the boy was taken for medical checks and, according to the report received by police, had no injuries. Other reports said he had light scrapes or marks from contact with the wall, but no fractures were reported.

The child’s mother, identified by local media as Andrea, said she had stepped away to use the bathroom when the boy got out. She said the child had not tried to reach the terrace on his own before the incident. Murillo said the boy was in good condition after the fall and described him as playful while under observation. The family’s accounts placed the accident in a short window when adults were not beside the child. Investigators had not publicly released a final account of how long the boy was alone, whether the terrace door had been open or whether any barrier failed. The videos also did not show an adult reaching the boy from inside the home before he fell.

The neighborhood response became a major part of the story after the footage circulated. One witness said the timing mattered because stores in the area were closing and the street could have been much emptier. Neighbors gathered under the boy and tried to coordinate while he was still holding the edge. After the fall, reports said some residents protested outside the home and questioned the adults’ supervision. Police units, including officers assigned to childhood and adolescence cases, arrived at the scene to take statements and refer the matter to family welfare authorities. The case has not been described as a criminal charge, but officials are reviewing whether there was neglect or another failure of care.

ICBF’s role is to check the child’s environment and decide whether protection steps are needed. Local reports said an interdisciplinary team was expected to evaluate the family setting and safety conditions at the home. Police child protection officials also began a parallel review of possible administrative or legal responsibility. Murillo said the family was waiting for the ICBF process and thanked the neighbors who helped save his son. “The child has no fractures, he is in good condition,” Murillo said in remarks reported by local media. Authorities had not announced any finding against the parents by May 11.

The case remained under review May 11, with the child reported out of danger and the official investigation still focused on the moments before the fall. The next public step is expected from police or ICBF after the family assessment is completed.
