Lauren Winans, 31, faces multiple felony charges stemming from alleged conduct in Nelson County in 2022.
BARDSTOWN, Ky. — A 31-year-old Kentucky woman has been indicted on multiple felony charges accusing her of sexually abusing a child younger than 12, according to court records and local news reports.
Lauren Winans of Bardstown was arrested Thursday after a Nelson County grand jury returned an indictment this week. Reports citing the indictment said the charges include first-degree sodomy, incest and sexual abuse. The alleged conduct occurred between Jan. 1 and Nov. 20, 2022, according to the court filing. The allegations have not been proven in court, and an indictment is not a finding of guilt.
The court papers allege that Winans committed sexual offenses against a child younger than 12. The indictment also contains an incest allegation involving a child who was related to her. News organizations have reported differing details about whether all counts involve the same child, and authorities have not publicly clarified the exact family relationship. The child’s identity is being withheld because the case involves allegations of sexual abuse of a minor.
Kentucky State Police are the primary investigating agency, according to a statement from the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office reported by local media. The sheriff’s office said it was not involved in the investigation and did not have details about the allegations. Publicly available reports have not provided a full account of the evidence presented to the grand jury.
Winans was being held at the LaRue County Detention Center after her arrest, WLKY reported. The New York Post, citing Nelson County Jailer Justin Hall, reported that her bond was set at $250,000. Public reports Saturday differed on whether she remained in custody after bond was set, so her current detention status could not be independently confirmed.
Winans is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 5 in Nelson Circuit Court, according to multiple reports. An arraignment is an early stage of a criminal case in which charges are formally addressed before the court. No plea had been publicly reported as of Saturday, and it was not immediately clear from the reviewed sources whether an attorney had entered an appearance on her behalf.
The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office also addressed public attention surrounding Winans because her husband previously worked for the department. The office said he resigned and joined the Bardstown Police Department earlier in 2026. The sheriff’s statement did not accuse him of involvement in the alleged crimes, and the reviewed court reporting did not identify him as a defendant in the case.
First-degree sodomy involving a child younger than 12 is among the most serious felony offenses under Kentucky law and can carry a lengthy prison sentence, including the possibility of life imprisonment if a defendant is convicted. Any sentence would depend on the specific charges sustained in court and the outcome of the criminal proceedings.
The prosecution remains pending in Nelson Circuit Court. Winans is presumed innocent unless proven guilty, and authorities have not publicly released additional information about the child or the evidence underlying the indictment. Her next reported court appearance is the Nov. 5 arraignment.
