REDSTONE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — An 11-year-old girl is being praised for her heroic actions after she intervened to protect her mother from a violent assault allegedly carried out by her own father. The incident unfolded on a Sunday afternoon when the father, 33-year-old Richard Cody Hall, reportedly broke into the home of his estranged wife’s parents, approximately 45 miles south of Pittsburgh.
According to Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele, Hall forcefully entered the residence by smashing through a rear glass door. The estranged couple, amidst divorce proceedings, had been separated due to Hall’s previous behavior. His wife had relocated with their two children, ages 8 and 11, to her parents’ home seeking safety and had secured a protective order against him.
Once inside, Hall allegedly headed to the master bedroom where he attacked his wife, resorting to both punching and stabbing. It was then that the couple’s 11-year-old daughter bravely intervened, placing herself between her parents. In doing so, she sustained a significant stab wound to her arm, but her actions are credited with saving her mother’s life.
Hall also turned violent against his in-laws during the chaos. Reports indicate he stabbed his mother-in-law and physically assaulted his father-in-law. The commotion prompted the couple’s 8-year-old son to escape to a neighbor’s house, where they contacted authorities. Police quickly responded to the 911 call and apprehended Hall at the scene.
In addition to injuring others, Hall had also inflicted harm upon himself.
He now faces multiple charges, including criminal attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of children. Despite the severity of the attack, all four victims were taken to local hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition.
Richard Cody Hall is currently under medical care and will be transferred to Fayette County Jail following his treatment. District Attorney Aubele expressed relief that the situation wasn’t more tragic, highlighting the young girl’s bravery as instrumental in preventing further harm. This is not the first instance where the child has intervened during episodes of violence involving her parents, indicating a troubling history.
