Two officers have been released from the hospital while a sixth occupant of the other vehicle remains in critical condition.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Five people were killed and three others were injured early Sunday when a vehicle carrying six people collided with a Memphis Police Department cruiser at an intersection in the Hickory Hill neighborhood, authorities said.
The crash happened about 12:26 a.m. Oct. 11 at Hickory Hill Road and Raines Road while two Memphis police officers were responding to a report of a person who had been shot near Flowering Peach Drive and Mendenhall Road, according to the Memphis Police Department. Four people in the civilian vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others from that vehicle were taken to a hospital in critical condition, and one later died. The remaining occupant was still hospitalized in critical condition in the latest reports.
The two officers in the police cruiser also were taken to a hospital in critical condition after the collision. Both were later treated and released. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into what caused the crash, a step that places the review outside the Memphis Police Department because one of its vehicles was involved.
Family members and local news sources have identified four of the five people killed as Rodney McNeal, 20; Syria Fifer, 21; Messiah Lee, 20; and Carlesha Fifer, 19. Authorities had not formally released the identity of the fifth person in the latest available reporting. Police also had not publicly identified the sixth occupant who survived.
Surveillance video obtained by Action News 5 shows the police cruiser traveling along Raines Road with emergency lights activated before entering the intersection. The station reported that the cruiser had a green traffic signal while the other vehicle was traveling on Hickory Hill Road, where the signal was red. Those details are part of the developing investigation, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol has not yet issued a final finding on the cause of the collision or released a complete crash report.
Memphis police said the officers were responding to a call involving a person who had reportedly been shot. Police records from the same morning show officers responded shortly afterward to the area of Flowering Peach Drive and Mendenhall Road, where they found a man with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have described the call the officers were answering as an urgent response, but investigators have not announced whether speed or any other factor contributed to the crash.
Grief spread through the Hickory Hill community in the days after the collision. A memorial grew near the intersection, and family members and friends gathered Tuesday night for a candlelight vigil honoring those who died. Relatives described the victims as young people whose deaths left their families struggling with a sudden and devastating loss.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young expressed condolences to the victims’ families Monday, saying five young people had lost their lives and that the families of everyone involved were facing “unimaginable grief.” He asked residents to keep those affected by the crash in their thoughts as the investigation continued.
Friends also remembered McNeal as someone known for his humor and positive spirit. Cory Robinson, a former coach who knew him for years, told Action News 5 that McNeal was often smiling and laughing and could make people around him laugh. The comments were among several tributes shared as relatives began publicly identifying those killed.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision and has not released a final determination of what caused it. Memphis police said additional information would be released as it becomes available. The two officers have left the hospital, while the surviving occupant of the other vehicle remained in critical condition in the latest public update.
