Pregnant Mom Found Bloody, Beaten to Death in Garage

Joseph Clark faces two second-degree murder charges after investigators found his pregnant wife dead in the garage of their Vail home.

VAIL, Ariz. — An Arizona man has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder after authorities accused him of killing his pregnant wife inside their Vail home while the couple’s two young children were also in the residence.

Joseph Clark, 49, was arrested after Pima County sheriff’s deputies responded to the home on Oct. 9 and found his wife, 39-year-old Noelle Clark, dead in the garage, according to authorities and court documents cited by local and national news organizations. Noelle Clark was pregnant at the time. The couple’s children, ages 2 and 5, were found unharmed.

Deputies were sent to a residence in the 17000 block of South Ridgerunner Drive at about 6:30 p.m. for a reported domestic disturbance. Authorities said Joseph Clark was detained as he was leaving the home. Investigators later alleged that he had called authorities and reported that he had killed his wife.

Early information released after deputies arrived described Noelle Clark as having an apparent gunshot wound. Court documents reported in the following days described a different sequence of events, alleging that she had been beaten and stabbed before being moved to the garage. Authorities have not publicly explained the discrepancy between the initial description and the later findings reported from the court records.

According to the criminal complaint, investigators believe the assault began in the children’s bedroom. Deputies reported finding evidence there that included a knife, blood and a belt that investigators said was consistent with injuries found on Noelle Clark. The documents allege Joseph Clark then moved his wife from the bedroom toward the garage.

Investigators also allege that a vehicle was driven over part of Noelle Clark’s body after she was moved into the garage. Court records described tire marks and other evidence that authorities said supported that account. The more graphic details of her injuries are not necessary to describe the criminal allegations and remain matters to be addressed through the court process.

Noelle Clark appeared to be in the second or third trimester of pregnancy, investigators said. Joseph Clark was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, with reporting on the case identifying the charges as involving the deaths of Noelle Clark and her unborn child. His bond was set at $1 million following his arrest.

The two children in the house were not physically injured, according to authorities. FOX 10 Phoenix reported that they were later placed in the custody of the Arizona Department of Child Safety. Officials have not publicly released additional information about the children, and their identities have appropriately remained private.

Court documents also describe statements Joseph Clark allegedly made to investigators after his detention. He claimed his wife had subjected him to electrical torture over a period of years. Investigators reported finding no visible injuries that supported those allegations. Authorities have not announced evidence substantiating his account, and the claims do not establish a legal defense or explain the case as a proven fact.

Investigators further alleged that evidence at the house suggested Joseph Clark had considered disposing of his wife’s body. That allegation is part of the prosecution’s account of the evidence and has not been proven in court. The available reports did not establish that Clark had entered a plea to the murder charges.

The case remains under investigation by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department as prosecutors move forward with the criminal proceedings. Local reporting said Clark was scheduled for another court appearance on Oct. 20. The charges against him are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
