Prosecutors said the confrontation began after an Amazon worker made a joking comment about the driver’s height.
MATTESON, Ill. — A Gary, Indiana, man has been charged with murder after prosecutors said he shot and killed an Amazon facility worker during a late-night confrontation outside a suburban Chicago warehouse.
Devonta Hodge, 33, is accused in the June 28 death of Dylan Perkins, 26, of Glenwood, outside the Amazon Fulfillment Center at 7001 Vollmer Road in Matteson. Authorities said Hodge was working as a DoorDash delivery driver when the encounter unfolded in the parking lot near the building entrance.
Matteson police said officers were called to the facility at about 10:54 p.m. for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found Perkins suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. Police said officers applied a tourniquet and performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Perkins was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified him.
Prosecutors said Perkins was on a break with two co-workers near an employee bus stop when Hodge arrived in a white Ford Escape to deliver food. As Hodge walked past the group, Perkins made a joking comment about Hodge’s height, prosecutors said in court. The men exchanged words before Hodge continued inside the facility to complete the delivery.
After Hodge left the building, surveillance video showed Perkins approaching him outside the entrance, prosecutors said. The two briefly walked alongside each other before Hodge pushed Perkins away, according to the court account. Prosecutors said Hodge pushed Perkins a second time, then pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired several shots. As Perkins fell, Hodge ran toward his vehicle and drove away, authorities said.
Police said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident tied to the confrontation between the two men. The Amazon facility was placed on lockdown after the gunfire while officers and investigators worked at the scene. Authorities said there was no continuing threat to the public. The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force assisted Matteson police in the investigation.
Hodge was taken into custody after meeting with investigators, police said. He was charged with murder and appeared in Cook County court, where Judge Torrie Luciana Corbin ordered him detained while the case proceeds. In a written detention order, Corbin called the killing senseless and said the allegations showed a violent response to a minor confrontation.
Amazon said in a statement that the company was saddened by the violence and was focused on supporting employees and Perkins’ family. The company did not release additional details about security procedures at the facility. DoorDash has not publicly detailed Hodge’s delivery status beyond the case information presented in court.
The shooting has left co-workers and relatives mourning Perkins, who worked as a janitorial employee at the facility. Investigators have not said whether Hodge and Perkins knew each other before the delivery. Authorities also have not released any claim that Perkins was armed during the confrontation.
The case remains pending in Cook County court. Hodge is being held while prosecutors move forward with the murder charge, and additional court dates are expected as the case enters the next stage.
