Webster, Massachusetts – A man from Webster, Massachusetts was taken into custody on Friday after allegedly luring a young girl into his car at Memorial Beach and later assaulting her. The incident occurred during a Patriots’ Day celebration on April 15, about 55 miles southwest of Boston.
According to the Webster police, the girl and her grandmother came to the police station to report the incident. The girl explained that the man struck up a conversation with her about his dog while they were at the beach. He then convinced her to get into his car and drove her to another location to drop off the dog. It was there that he allegedly assaulted her inappropriately.
After the assault, the man dropped the girl off near her home, where she informed her grandmother about the ordeal. Law enforcement immediately started gathering evidence and increased patrols around the beach area.
During an interview with detectives, the girl disclosed that the man had mentioned he would return to the beach the next day around 11:30 a.m. She also provided the police with some distinctive characteristics of the man’s car. Combining their efforts with other agencies, Webster police flooded the area and identified a vehicle that matched the description given by the girl.
Over the next few days, law enforcement closely monitored the suspect’s movements. On Friday, the police followed the suspect from his home in Southbridge to Memorial Beach. They apprehended 68-year-old Walter Fanion without incident. He now faces charges of kidnapping, enticing a child under 16, and four counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. Fanion is currently being held in jail on $75,040 cash bail.
The arrest of the suspect brings some peace of mind to the local community. However, it serves as a reminder for parents and guardians to remain vigilant when it comes to the safety of their children, especially in public spaces. Authorities are urging anyone with information about additional incidents involving Walter Fanion to come forward and report them to the Webster police.
